2028 High School Bat Rule: BBCOR vs. USABat -4, -5 and -6 (What to Buy Now)

Oct 05, 202627 Baseball Bat Fitting Team

Quick answer: Starting with the 2028 high school season, players can use bats marked USABat -4, -5 or -6, in addition to drop -3 BBCOR bats (USA Baseball). Your current BBCOR bat stays legal for high school play indefinitely. If your player needs a bat for the 2027 season, buy a BBCOR -3 that fits today.

What changed?

In July 2026, two decisions changed the rules:

  1. USA Baseball took over the BBCOR standard from the NCAA and renamed it USA BBCOR. The performance limit itself does not change (MLB.com).
  2. The NFHS (high school rules body) voted to allow lighter bats. From 2028, high school players may use USA BBCOR (-3) or USABat -4, -5 and -6 bats (MLB.com).

The lighter bats are built to the same wood-like performance standard. USA Baseball says the high school performance standard "will not change" (USA Baseball).

Key dates

Date What happens
Now through the 2027 season No change. High school requires a BBCOR -3 (or wood) bat.
July 1, 2027 Bats with the new USA BBCOR mark go on sale (MLB.com). USABat -4/-5/-6 high school bats are expected around the same time (GameChanger).
2028 high school season High school players may use BBCOR -3, USA BBCOR -3, or USABat -4/-5/-6. This applies at every level, including varsity (GameChanger).
2027–2028 college seasons Current BBCOR bats are still allowed in NCAA play (USA Baseball).
January 1, 2029 NCAA play allows only bats with the USA BBCOR mark (USA Baseball).

Is my current BBCOR bat still legal?

For high school: yes, indefinitely. Currently approved BBCOR bats "remain compliant in high school baseball indefinitely" (MLB.com).

For college: current BBCOR bats are allowed through the 2028 NCAA season. From January 1, 2029, college bats need the USA BBCOR mark (USA Baseball). If your player is a junior or senior headed to college ball, plan on a USA BBCOR-marked bat for college.

Can my player use a USSSA -5 bat in high school in 2028?

No. This is the most common mix-up. A USSSA -5 travel bat is not a USABat -5 bat (Bat Digest). USSSA bats carry a 1.15 BPF thumbprint stamp and are built to a different, higher-performance standard. The 2028 rule allows only bats with the USA Baseball mark and the drop number on the taper (USA Baseball).

Legal high school marks from 2028 (USA Baseball):

  • BBCOR Certified .50 (current bats)
  • USA Baseball BBCOR Certified .50 (new mark)
  • USA Baseball -4, -5 or -6

Should we buy now or wait?

Your player's situation Our recommendation
Needs a high school bat for the 2027 season Buy a BBCOR -3 now. It stays legal for high school forever. (Bat Digest gives the same advice.)
8th grader moving up, smaller or still building strength A light-swinging BBCOR (balanced, one-piece alloy) now. Re-evaluate a -5 when bats ship in mid-2027.
Freshman or sophomore in 2028 who struggles with -3 swing speed Watch for USABat -5/-6 releases in summer 2027. We'll fit them on HitTrax as soon as they arrive.
Junior or senior planning to play in college Stay with -3. College requires USA BBCOR from 2029.
Budget-conscious family A used or prior-year BBCOR makes even more sense now, because it stays high school legal (Bat Digest).

Check your state. NFHS sets the national rule, but state associations and local programs can add restrictions (Bat Digest). Georgia families should confirm with GHSA and their coach before the 2028 season.
