USA vs. USSSA Bats: Which Bat Is Legal for Your League in Georgia?

Oct 05, 202627 Baseball Bat Fitting Team

IMPORTANT: Check with your league before you buy.

Bat rules are set by each league and organization, and they change from season to season. Before buying, confirm with your coach or league which bat stamps (USSSA, USA Baseball or BBCOR) are allowed for your player's age group. Not sure? Call us at 678.272.2267 and we'll help you check.

Quick answer:

  • Local rec leagues around McDonough and the south metro generally allow USSSA bats. Rules vary by organization, so confirm with yours.
  • Little League is the main exception: it requires a USA Baseball (USABat) stamped bat.
  • Travel and tournament ball usually allows a USSSA 1.15 BPF bat, which has more pop.
  • High school needs BBCOR -3. Starting in 2028 it also allows USABat -4/-5/-6.

For most families in our area, one USSSA bat covers both rec and travel ball. If your player is in Little League or another league that requires the USA Baseball stamp, you will need a USA bat for those games.

Tip: Look at the stamp, not the color or the price. Officials check for a permanent certification mark; stickers and decals don't count (USA Baseball).

Rules by league

Little League (Majors and below)

  • Non-wood bats must carry the USA Baseball logo.
  • All BPF 1.15 (USSSA) bats are prohibited.
  • Max length 33", max barrel 2 5/8", no drop limit (Little League).

Intermediate (50/70) and Junior League also allow BBCOR. Senior League requires BBCOR.

Cal Ripken / Babe Ruth

Cal Ripken requires the USABat marking with a max 2 5/8" barrel, and no BBCOR bats. The 13–16 division allows USABat or BBCOR (2026 Babe Ruth condensed rules).

Local rec leagues

Most rec leagues in our area allow USSSA bats, which is why we stock mostly USSSA youth bats. Rules are set by each organization and can change by season or age group. Always check with your local organization for which bats can be used.

Dixie Youth

Dixie Youth's resources page lists its approved bats alongside the USA Baseball Bat Standard (Dixie Youth). Check the current DYB rulebook for your division.

USSSA (Georgia)

Georgia USSSA's bat-rules page says (GA USSSA):

  • 13U: max drop -5 with the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp, BBCOR (-3), or wood.
  • 14U–18U: BBCOR .50 (-3) or wood only.
  • USA Baseball bats are eligible for play.

USSSA's 2026 national by-laws make BBCOR -3 the national standard for 14U starting January 1, 2026, unless a state opts into a -5 exception (USSSA 2026 By-Laws). They also allow USA Baseball-stamped bats in any USSSA event except where BBCOR is required.

Perfect Game (2026 rules)

(Perfect Game)

  • 12U: no -5 USSSA bats.
  • 13U Major/Open: -5 or -3. 13U AA/AAA: -8, -6, -5 or -3.
  • 14U Major/Open: BBCOR -3 only. 14U AA/AAA: -3 or -5.
  • 15U and up: BBCOR -3 or one-piece wood.

High school (NFHS)

High school requires BBCOR -3 now. Beginning in 2028 it also allows USABat -4, -5 and -6 (MLB.com). A USSSA -5 is not a USABat -5. See our 2028 high school bat rule guide.

Which bat should we buy?

Your player plays... Buy this
Local rec league Usually a USSSA bat. Confirm with your league first (shop USSSA bats)
Little League USA Baseball bat (ask us, we can order the right one)
Travel ball only, 12U and under USSSA bat, usually -10 or -8 (shop USSSA bats)
Both rec and travel Usually one USSSA bat covers both locally. If your rec league requires the USA stamp, a USA bat works in both, since USSSA allows USA-stamped bats
13U travel Check the event: a -8 or -5 USSSA bat, or start the move to BBCOR
14U travel Plan on BBCOR -3 for most national and Georgia USSSA events (shop BBCOR)

FAQ

Can you use a USSSA bat in Little League? No. Little League prohibits all BPF 1.15 bats (Little League).

Can you use a USSSA bat in rec league? In our area, usually yes. Most rec leagues around McDonough allow USSSA bats, but rules vary by organization, so always check with your league before buying.

Can you use a USA bat in USSSA? Yes, in most USSSA events, except divisions that require BBCOR (USSSA 2026 By-Laws).

Why are USSSA bats more expensive and "hotter"? The USSSA 1.15 BPF standard allows more performance than USABat's wood-like standard. That's why some leagues, like Little League, don't allow them.

What bat does a 14U player need? For most 14U travel events in 2026, BBCOR -3 or wood. Perfect Game AA/AAA still allows -5 (Perfect Game).
